Some recent highlights include:

1. Anglo American launched the prototype of its hydrogen-powered mine haul truck at its Mogalakwena PGMs mine in May 2022, and aims to roll out the technology across its global fleet of diesel-powered mine haul trucks once the pilot is proven. As part of this project, Anglo American have also built a zero-emission vehicles hydrogen production, storage, and refuelling complex that incorporates the largest electrolyser in Africa. Construction on a 100 MW solar PV field to support the production of green hydrogen to fuel the haul trucks is expected to start later in 2022. Beyond eliminating greenhouse emissions from diesel, planned haul truck hydrogen complexes have the potential to serve as local and regional hubs for the emerging hydrogen economy in South Africa.

2. The Anglo American Platinum Schools project supports three technical high schools near its mining operations in South Africa in partnership with the Department of Basic Education (DBE). This project invests in practical machinery used in technical classrooms, basic infrastructure improvement to relieve classroom overcrowding, and the professional development of teachers. The aim is to ensure that learners are equipped with the skills and education that would provide them with employment opportunities, including at the company’s operations in their local communities.
